Wednesday Day 4:
The night before it was mad windy and continued on through the night. In the morning it really looked like it was going to storm on us so we tried to get out of the park as quick as possible. We ended up driving back down to Quilpie and exploring the town. They had some cool shops, hotels, and restaurants. When graham and I were filling up our water bottles we actually came across scooter again. He was enjoying himself playing the slots in the bar because he had nothing to do since he only works as contract hire. Sorta felt bad because he was excited to see us again and wanted us to hang out again that night, but we didn't. After exploring the town we went to the lake that was hyped up so much. The lake ended up being a mucky brown body of water, but to make it worth it we had to get into it. Even if there may have been crocodiles, leeches, poisonous snakes, man eating fish, and what not. Graham, Thomas, Sam, and I were the only brave enough ones to venture into the water. Wasn't bad, we all lived too. I reckon it's a good thing we chose to go to the national park because it would've been depressing to waste a day at that lake. But while we were in the water the other four decided it was good idea to leave us behind. Actually we didn't really care because we knew they'd come back and there was still so much to explore in the area. We came across this huge bus which had stickers from each town it has been to in Australia. Pretty cool eh?
A few minutes later they came driving back and in an attempt to get more satisfaction out of their practical joke they sat their with their cars locked. I played along by getting on top of the van and riding it like a safari. I know, not the safest thing, but it was loads of fun. Haha and to get the girls back in the car I mooned them through the sunroof. :-p They enjoyed it so much that they have a few photos on their camera. I guess for later viewing. Eventually they let us back in and we went back to quilpie to take some showers. While in quilpie I enjoyed my time in the library reading this book called 50 years of photographing Australia by Steve Parish and it was amazing. He has just page after page of amazing pictures and each one has a little story to it. Parish also explains his love for nature in the book and his favorite one being a little child touching a turtle at the aquarium because it shows how the exploration, fascination, and our future is with our kids. I loved some of the things the author said.
After quilpie we drove south and east and ended up camping near this small river. We were really stupid and neglected the on coming rain and happened to be satisfied with one of the lowest campsites. At first it drizzled on and off and seemed like it was going to pass over, but then finally he started to pour with strong winds. The tents were holding up fine, but the ground was getting really really muddy and underneath you could feel the water collecting. So Janine and I bailed to the car. But then it started to lighting and the metal ladder was stuck in the mud. Graham was a hero and pulled the ladder out but as soon as that happend the car rocked and Graham just caught himself on all fours before falling into the mud and spending the night outside. He came back into the car and we had to clean his feet off with the only thing we had, baby wipes. It was a crazy night, so crazy that it was funny.
